Once upon a time, twin boys, Yukio Okumura and Rin Okumura, were born from a human woman as the sons of Satan. They were raised as normal children by an exorcist, Father Shiro Fujimoto, until Rin got into a fight one day, which ignited his blue flames and caused his demonic features to show. These blue flames exposed that he was the son of Satan and he was dangerous to human kind. Growing up, Rin always felt like he was an outcast and didn't belong anywhere, and it wasn't until now that he gained proof that he really was different from everyone else. However, Yukio did not exhibit these same demonic features and powers even though he was also the son of Satan. He didn't let this information get to him but instead, he wanted to help protect Rin from Satan by training to become an exorcist with the help of Father Shiro. Not only that but he wanted to keep Rin as humanly as possible and show everyone that a demons and humans can live together.

Although Yukio did his best to protect Rin, people started to find out about his demonic powers and the Vatican got concerned with everyone's safety. Everyone spreaded rumors about how dangerous Rin was and how he was going to kill everyone one. Rin heard of these rumors and lashed out immediately, which caused his blue flames to ignite. Little did people know that these blue flames harmed everything it came in contact with. Day by day, Rin caused damage to everything in his way, and no one knew what to do to keep him under control. Yukio heard of Rin's actions and felt like this was so out of the blue because Rin would not act out like this for no reason.

Yukio approached Rin and the blue flames started to die down because Rin didn't want to hurt his twin brother. Yukio asked him why he was acting like this and harming people when he should be trying to coincide with humans peacefully. Rin told Yukio about the rumors he heard about him being dangerous and it infuriated him. Rin didn't mean to hurt anyone and didn't understand why he couldn't keep his flames under control. From this point on, he wanted to prove to everyone he isn't dangerous, so he enrolled into True Cross Academy to become an exorcist and defeat Satan. Because he attended this school, Rin was able to control his blue flames and used it to protect human kind instead of putting them in danger.

Author's note: I am currently watching the anime Blue Exorcist and decided to relate the Jataka Tale The Elephant Girly-face to the anime. In the anime, Rin is seen as a bad character because of his blue flames but he has always been a good kid growing up until people started spreading rumors about him. This is similar to the elephant Girly-face because she was so gentle and kind before she heard bad people talking about bad actions. In the end, Rin's twin brother, Yukio saved him from being seen as bad like the wise man saved Girly-face from being seen as bad.

  1. Wow, I haven’t seen Blue Exorcist in YEARS! What a nice surprise! I liked how you were able to mix such different source materials, but they worked well. I never would have thought to combine the two! You explained the plot well. I think it was necessary for anyone who would have no prior knowledge of the series. I’m not as familiar with the story you retold, but I enjoyed reading this!

  2. Hi Tracy! This is a super creative adaptation, and it makes me want to check out Blue Exorcist. You do a great job blending the two stories, and it works really well because no one would have thought to combine them, so that makes the story even more interesting. Also, I think that the idea of evil and Satan in this story relate in a really interesting way to the source material. Great job!
